It’s that time of year again. Time to start planning your Mystery Skypes! Yes, there are several places to sign up for Mystery Skypes (here is the sign up for 2011-2012 which is still active, created by Mystery Skype founder Caren MacConnell), but I am trying to create a more current list for the upcoming school year.
If you have never done a Mystery Skype, they are simple. You will use Skype to connect your class with another class in the United States. Don't worry about keeping your Mystery Skypes in the United States either. We did a Mystery Skype with another 3rd grade class in Brazil last year!
You can either have each class give a set number of clues/information about your state, then guess the location at the end, OR you can have your students ask closed ended questions to the other class, narrowing down their location with each question while they are doing the same for you. I prefer to do the latter as it is much more engaging.
Please click on the "Resources" tab to find out how to set up your first Mystery Skype. Most importantly click on "Sign Up" to get your name on the list, and feel free to start contacting other teachers to get started!
Last year I introduced Mystery Skypes to my classes and it was a valuable, engaging addition to my curriculum. Every student in your class will be engaged and on task. Empower your students, and connect them to the world with Skype!
